I would describe my latest work as abstract landscapes with 'doors' or 'plinths' that support eclectic subject matter, just like the fourth plinth in Trafalgar square, I use the same approach for a background, but with different objects - a homage perhaps, to my sculptural roots. The Linear or patchwork backgrounds create a narrative for the subject matter, placing them in their origins, I then elevate the focal point into prominence - to something that's maybe not normally given credence, and place it on it's 'plinth', diverting the viewer from the original relevance or setting. A brief biography: Gabriel graduated from Bretton Hall, University of Leeds and lived and worked as a sculptor in Wakefield, West Yorkshire until moving to London in 1999. He retrained as a painter, and specialised in portraits before moving into more contemporary and abstract realms. He also worked as a freelancer, designing and constructing theatre sets and scenery for many of London’s popular theatrical venues. He has also been the Latymer Upper School Arts technician in Hammersmith, West London for the last twelve years, and has curated over fifty art exhibitions for students, staff and professional artists in Latymer’s purpose built gallery. This has led to Gabriel using his curatorial talents in several recent exciting projects. Gabriel lives in Harlesden, North West London and has become heavily involved in the community. His work as Director of Cultural Development with the Harlesden Town Team, a regeneration minded resident organisation, has inspired the creation of www.harlesdengallery.co.uk, a website that showcases and champions the work of NW10's resident artists. Gabriel also plays an important role as Exhibitions and Membership officer for the Free Painters and Sculptors group. FPS is an established group of artists that exhibit twice a year in some of London’s best commercial galleries. Gabriel is currently planning their next show in November. |
