Statement:
Gabriel's work focuses on the dissection and then reinterpretation of eclectic,
quirky, or humorous imagery taken from his own photography.
He identifies the
key areas of interest and detail, whilst abstracting or removing the elements
considered unimportant or irrelevant, to create illustrational and sometimes
abstract compositions in paint, pencil and ink.
A
brief biography
Gabriel
graduated from Bretton Hall, University of Leeds and lived and worked as a
sculptor in Wakefield, West Yorkshire until moving to London in 1999. He
retrained as a painter, and specialised in portraits before moving into more
contemporary and abstract realms. He also worked as a freelancer, designing and
constructing theatre sets and scenery for many of London’s popular theatrical venues.
He has also
been the Latymer Upper School Arts technician in Hammersmith, West
London for the last eleven years, and has curated over fifty art
exhibitions for students, staff and professional artists in Latymer’s purpose
built gallery. This has led to Gabriel using his curatorial talents in
several recent exciting projects.
Gabriel lives with his partner in Harlesden, North West London
and has become heavily involved in the community. His work with the Harlesden
Town Team and its regeneration of the area has inspired the creation of www.harlesdengallery.co.uk,
a website that showcases and champions the work of NW10's resident artists.
Gabriel also plays an important role in the Free
Painters and Sculptors group. FPS is an established group of
artists that exhibit twice a year in some of London’s best commercial galleries.
Gabriel is currently the membership and marketing officer on the committee and
runs the group’s website. He is also curating their next show in November which
is being held at La Galleria, Pall Mall.
