ScULPTOR | PHOTOGRAPHER
Gabriel is based at Noxon Farm in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire and has recently rekindled his love of sculpture and the art of making. He trained in Sculpture at Bretton Hall, University of Leeds and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and has exhibited his sculpture and photography nationally with works featuring in collections in London and throughout the UK.
Artist Statement
My practice feeds my need of making. The act of sculpting - revisited after nearly 30 years - has revitalised an innate desire to explore space and form and the fluid possibilities of metal, brought to life in both internal and external environments.
My new works are thoughtful decorative pieces whose narratives are informed by social, often whimsical concepts that reflect both human experience and the distinct wildlife of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley.
My studio process is instinctive, highly physical, and deeply tied to the honesty of metal and metal fabrication. I build up layers of steel and found objects through welding, subsequently carving and refining the forms with various cutting and abrasive grinder discs to achieve a mix of aesthetic finishes.
To honor this rigorous process, I typically finish the sculptures with a penetrating protective oil. This prevents rust while allowing the metal to develop a rich, weathered, bronze-like patina that evolves over time in response to its environment. For extra longevity, works for high footfall locations such as public commissions for example, can be galvanized and powder-coated upon request.
My photography is heavily influenced by my geographical surroundings in the Forest of Dean as well as travels further afield. Multiple and long exposures are key to manipulating my captured subject matter.
All works featured are for sale and commissions are welcome. Most sculpture is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation and plinths are available upon request.
